Contrary to what Donald Trump would have us believe, the art of Apprenticeship has largely been lost. Try to approach any master in any industry and ask that he or she mentor you for free, give you hands-on work, and then assign you to paid projects…well you might get slapped. Or banned from an email list.
Even in large companies where managers are charged with developing their employees, we find positions bogarted and knowledge secreted away at all cost. They fear their job is at stake if they help another master what they have mastered. And so we feel the pressure of the glass ceiling, as employees and even as entrepreneurs or freelancers.
Yet apprenticeship led to the greatest minds, artists, and masters of old.

How the Craftsman’s Lodge Apprentice Program Works
There are three levels of Craftsmen (and Craftswomen!) in our program. You can choose whichever level you like for any of the projects available in this program (projects come from fellow BoomTown members who wish to outsource basic tasks or who would like to apprentice a new member).
Levels of Craftsmen:
- Shave Tail
Shave tails are still green behind the ears and, though they surely know more than Boomin’ Barney about internet marketing, it may not be much more! As a shave tail, you’ll work closely with your mentor, who will assist you step by step in completing the tasks he or she assigns you.BoomTown also provides several Step-by-Step Skills Tutorials on things like writing SEO articles and keyword research that you can follow. Shave tails apprentice for free, and in return gain a valuable new skill or expertise. Mentoring members often refer clients to their graduated apprentices when you are no longer a shave tail, so it leads into paid work as well!
- Trainee
Trainees have a basic knowledge of a skill or expertise, but still do not feel comfortable managing a client on their own. Trainee projects are paid apprenticeships, sort of like a paid internship. The pay isn’t going to land you in the six-figure range yet, but you’ll be earning money while learning valuable skills you can monetize later. - Junior
Similar to an entry-level position with a company, juniors receive reasonable earnings for their projects and are largely autonomous at this point. You’ll usually take a junior position to take a test run - attempt to manage a project on your own knowing that an expert is nearby to review deliverables and provide guidance.
Once you move beyond junior level, you’ll move out of the Crafstman’s Lodge for a time and work on our regular Available Projects and any other projects you or our sales team lands.
But when you refine your expertise and want to expand your consultancy, you’ll be back! Because the only way to scale a one-person shop is to outsource basic tasks to someone else. And who better than someone willing to assist you for free or low-fee in return for your guidance!
